Cultural Festival
Our teacher invited us to attend this Japanese cultural event hosted by the city of Utsunomiya. We didn’t really know what to expect, but it ended up being really great because of all the hands on activities for the kids.
Nathan and Heather got to participate in a traditional Japanese drumming style called wadaiko. Nathan was a little nervous because it was so loud and powerful, but he enjoyed it.
Next they tried some Ikebana flower arranging. There is some special technique for flower arrangement and we don’t know it. So Nathan just stabbed the flowers in however he wanted. I think it looked good!
Next we all did some Japanese calligraphy called Shodo. Everyone did great.
After having some snacks and hanging out with some of our American friends that also came, we finished the day making some Japanese postcard art. Its called Etegami. All the old Japanese ladies loved watching Caroline and Nathan’s concentration to finish their cards. And they came out great!
