Mashiko Hiking

Finally we found a hiking trail that is open during this pandemic. Its in a small town near us called Mashiko. It took us about 30 minutes to drive there and we arrived around 8:30am. This turned into a great adventure and much more challenging than we anticipated.

We started at #1, the Parking Lot

This was the easiest part of our day. We found a caterpillar before we even entered the trail.

We hiked for about an hour up to the peak of the first mountain. It was called 三登谷山 which I don’t actually know how to pronounce, but I would translate it as Three-Climb-Valley-Mountain. It is 433 meters tall (1,421 feet). The kids were great and energetic and there weren’t too many people on the trail.

Also it was possible to see Mount Fuji, barely!

Next we continued our hike up to the highest mountain on the trail. Called 雨巻山 (Rain Roll Mountain?) It is 533 meters (1749ft). It took about another hour. The kids were wearing out by the time we got there and we were all super hungry. Luckily we had packed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chips, goldfish, and oranges.

Eating at the Peak

Now that we were full of food and energy, we made our way over to an observation deck. But actually by this time, it was heating up and the haze was preventing us from seeing much from the deck. But the kids still had a good time climbing it.

Next we started the most challenging part of our hike. We were just trying to get to the road so we could easily walk back to the parking lot. We didn’t want to hike 2 hours back the way we came. We didn’t realize this was the advanced hiking course.

The map actually says “this is dangerous for beginners”

It was a pretty steep, slippery, stream that we carefully descended for about an hour. The kids were tough!

Finally we made it to the road and walked the rest of the way back to the parking lot. In total, it was about a 5 hour day.

Finally flat ground back to the parking lot

A pretty adventurous day!
